Buy Happy Giving
It’s always a good feeling to give back, and last night at the Morrie’s Heritage Car Connection Dojo we did something a little unconventional. Several Morrie’s employees came together to pack 100 backpacks with care for PAB’S PACKS, a local non-profit that has a very unique mission.
Their mission is to deliver backpacks full of comfort items to teens with chronic illnesses that spend a lot of time in the hospital. “PAB” is for Pia and Abbie, the founders and Chief Inspiration Officers of PAB’S PACKS. PAB’S was created after both Pia and Abbie (long time friends) spent time in the hospital dealing with their own battles with chronic illnesses. During their time in the hospital they both felt the need to help other teens in some way after their long stays and frequent visits to the hospital.
Each pack is filled with a items that are meant to give the teens some comfort and to let them know someone is thinking about them. A comfortable blanket, stress ball in the shape of a heart, Pabby the Penguin (their stuffed mascot), chap stick, a notebook, a pre-stamped postcard, and our favorite – a personalized note to the teen. Each personalized card is signed with “We got your back” to let teens know they are not alone in their circumstances.
Morrie’s and PAB’S PACKS will be hand delivering the backpacks tomorrow at Children’s Hospital in St. Paul. Morrie’s is excited to be partnering with PAB’S PACKS and we look forward to helping pack and distribute more backpacks in the future!

Morrie’s has partnered with the Minnesota Zoo to help restore Minnesota’s Prairie Wildlife by providing a Mazda CX-5 vehicle. Minnesota Zoo conservationists use it in the field across Minnesota and beyond researching prairie butterflies, moose and more recently bison. Below you’ll find an update from Minnesota Zoo conservationist Erik Runquist.
The Minnesota Zoo works every day to save wildlife. Our programs in Minnesota and around the world depend on partnerships. We have benefited from a great Mazda CX-5 field research vehicle through a generously donated lease from Morrie’s Automotive Group. In the past several months, we’ve taken the field vehicle across Minnesota and beyond to help save prairie butterflies and restore bison. Here are our Top Five spots from this summer!
1) The Minnesota Zoo
Who wouldn’t want to be at the Minnesota Zoo? At the Zoo, we expanded the world’s only breeding program for the US Threatened Dakota skipper, raising more than 150 from egg to adulthood, and produced many hundreds more eggs! The CX-5 was a true work horse, hauling around hundreds of food plants for the butterflies and other supplies!
2) Northeast South Dakota
Northeast South Dakota may have the world’s last best populations of Dakota skippers. We found most populations to be in good shape! Working under federal and state permits, we collected more eggs from a limited number of females and brought the eggs back to the Zoo.
3) Northwest Minnesota
With possibly the last Dakota skipper populations in our state, northwest Minnesota is very important to our work. With the CX-5, we found healthy numbers at the known site, and also searched new sites for previously unknown populations.
4) Western North Dakota
In mid-June, we took the CX-5 from the Zoo on its longest road trip ever: to western North Dakota! We surveyed prairie butterflies and looked for the rare Garita skipperling. While the skipperling remained elusive, we did find some spectacular prairies and great wildlife on the edge of the Badlands.
5) Minneopa State Park
Speaking of bison, did you know that the Minnesota Zoo and DNR proudly established a new herd of genetically rare bison at Minneopa State Park near Mankato in September? Zoo staff used the eye-catching CX-5 to help usher in a new era of Minnesota prairie wildlife conservation at Minneopa!
We are doing a lot thanks to all our great funders and partners. With the awesome Mazda CX-5 field vehicle from Morrie’s Auto Group, we can it do so much better! Thank you Morrie’s!
This past Saturday we held our second Morrie’s Teen Driving School of the year. Despite some light rain in the morning things clear up just in time for the teens to hit the skills course and participate in the numerous activities that help them become safer drivers.
The teens started out the morning practicing their braking, emergency lane changing and fundamental handling skills.
After lunch we tied some of the skills together via a forward and backward slalom course, decreasing radius exercise, loss of traction course and few other exercises. At day’s end all of the teens agreed that their skills and confidence had increased dramatically. Both parents and teens left the event knowing that the roads will now be a bit safer.
We have four more Morrie’s Teen Driving Schools scheduled for this year, including one on August 15th, September 26, October 10 and November 13th. For more information and to register visit www.morries.com/teenschool.
The third annual 90 Days of Giving has finally come to a close after another terrific year of giving back to the local Chippewa, Wisconsin Community. For three months during the Holiday Season Morrie’s Chippewa Valley Mazda pays it forward by giving away much needed vehicles to nominated families. Following the format of previous giveaways, Morrie’s Chippewa Valley partnered with Gordy’s County Market to give three cars away packaged with a $500.00 gas gift card.
The most difficult part of making these wishes come true is going through the hundreds of nominations Morrie’s Chippewa Valley Mazda receives every year for the 90 Days of Giving. Every story is heartfelt and narrowing it down to three is a difficult process. This year the vehicles that were given away went to three deserving people that not only needed a new car, but were relied on by their family and community for rides everyday as well.
Receiving the most notoriety and engagement this year, local news and radio stations crowded the three giveaways bringing the community even more awareness around the generosity of the Morrie’s and Gordy’s crew. Another big part in making these giveaways into a reality is keeping it a surprise. Morrie’s and Gordy’s go to some pretty extensive lengths to make sure the car recipient has a very special moment when they are recognized as a winner of the 90 Days of Giving. Bill, the General Manager at Morrie’s Chippewa Valley Mazda, often will tell the winner “This is your day” making sure the recipient knows that this is a very special life changing moment for them. This year the giveaways took place at the first nominee’s house, the second was surprised in Gordy’s County Market, and the third nominee received their vehicle in Morrie’s Chippewa Valley Mazda’s Service Drive.
We look forward to next year’s 90 Days of Giving and appreciate everyone who participated in this year’s giveaways.
When we started the Buy Happy Backpack Round-Up last month, we here at Morrie’s thought raising just around 1,000 was a pretty lofty goal. Boy were we wrong! Imagine our surprise when the final tally came in at just over 4,000 backpacks for local Twin Cities students. Additionally, we donated $10 for each backpack providing The Salvation Army with over $40,000 to go towards school supplies.
We couldn’t have done it without the generous support of each team member at our store locations, the customers, vendors and everyone else that chose to donate. Both our Brooklyn Park and Cadillac locations tipped the scale, bringing in over 1400 an 1200 backpacks respectively. Please take a look at the video below from our team here at Morrie’s to learn just how important this really is to students across the state.
We made the final drop off to The Salvation Army yesterday and the team couldn’t have been more excited. Additionally, KSTP came out to film a segment during the drop-off which can be viewed HERE by starting the video at the 11:38 mark.
Once again, many thanks to all of you who made the campaign an enormous success! You all are the real reason we succeeded. You donated bags. You helped amplify the message and because of your efforts thousands of kids will be better equipped to succeed this school year!
The team here at Morrie’s is very excited to announce our upcoming partnership with The Salvation Army and the KS95 radio team – the Buy Happy Backpack Round-Up! Beginning Monday, July 28th drop off a new backpack at any Morrie’s location across the Twin Cities area and we’ll donate $10 in school supplies to The Salvation Army. It’s that simple!
The Salvation Army Northern Division has nearly 800 employees and 81,000 volunteers serving thousands of people in need in every county of Minnesota and North Dakota. With nine Twin Cities store locations, 14 housing locations and 234,00 people served The Salvation Army Twin Cities has been a priceless resource for community members everywhere.

Tis the season to give back to those in your community and this year we’ve teamed up with Mazda to do just that. Now through January 2nd 2014 for every test drive we will donate an hour of our time to a local worthy cause. But that’s not all! When you buy or lease a new Mazda, we will donate $100 to one of the select charity organizations:
Giving back is an important part of how we do business here at Morrie’s, that is why we created the Buy Happy giving program. This program gives us the opportunity to give back to local organizations through volunteering, donating, spreading awareness and much more. When Mazda customers purchase a new vehicle they will choose from the above organizations to donate to. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the American Red Cross, American Heart Association and Mazda Foundation are the four national charities chosen by Mazda and United Health Care Children’s Foundation has been chosen by us as our local charity.
For more information about United Health Care Children’s Foundation head over to their website. Make sure to check the official website of Mazda Drive 4 Good often to see how many service hours have been pledged and how much money has been donated!

The month of September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month and 2013 marks the 15th year that Hyundai and the Hope on Wheels program have been helping to fight this cause. Every time Morrie’s 394 Hyundai sell a new Hyundai vehicle, $14 is donated to the program to help fund the research to fight childhood cancer. Since its inception in 1998, Hyundai Hope on Wheels has committed more than $72 million (and counting) to children’s hospitals and organizations nationwide to help fight kids cancer. The goal behind the program is to share personal triumphs of each of the children and their families all across the country.
The Hope on Wheels goal for this year is to gain 100,000 “likes” on Facebook to help build awareness and get the word out about the cause. On July 23rd the Hyundai Cancer Institute opened a location in the brand new Bill Holmes Tower at the CHOC Children’s in Orange County, CA. The project has come together from a 5-year long commitment that Hyundai has made and over $10 million invested which began in 2011. Many other grants are being donated to help the cause all over the country from the more than 820 Hyundai dealers nationwide.
Everyday nearly 50 children are diagnosed with cancer and while there are many advancements in cancer research, no child deserves to fight this alone. That is the basis from where the program was developed, and what keeps the program striving for more and improved research everyday. This is why the U.S. Hyundai Dealers, the Company, and thousands of customers look to donate to make a difference today. Make sure to “like” Hyundai Hope on Wheels Facebook page to help build the awareness with us. If you’re a runner/walker/jogger look up the Hyundai Hope on Wheels 5K events around the country to help support the cause in a town near you by clicking here.
“We’ve now raised over $72 million dollars, and ask everyone to join us this September on Facebook to raise awareness about this cause. ”
-John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America.
The Morrie’s Mazda/Miracles Of Mitch Mazda 2 made its second appearance this past weekend. Many consider Road America to be the United States premier racetrack. With its dramatic elevation changes and technical corners, it demands the best from both driver and car. Then, stir in a couple long straights where maximum speed is obtained.
At Road America, our nimble and reliable little Mazda 2 routinely hit speeds well over one hundred miles per hour bringing home third place. This was a particularly strong finish given that it is difficult for a single car to compete against a team of several cars as they can use each other for drafting and even bump drafting.
With Michael Ashby at the wheel, the Morrie’s Mazda/Miracles Of Mitch Mazda 2 broke up their formation to finish a very strong third. An engine control unit re-flash, now available, will give us some additional horsepower and a few more RPM’s at the top end. With these modest upgrades, we will improve on these already fantastic results.
