#MorriesRoadTrip: Our Favorite Weekend Road Trip Destinations

Long weekends are the perfect time to head out on the open road and leave home behind for a few days. These destinations get the #MorriesRoadTrip seal of approval for perfect long weekend road trips.

Superior National Forest
It’s a 5-6 hour drive but once you get to Duluth, it’s incredibly scenic as you follow Lake Superior along Hwy 61. There are a ton of beautiful state parks full of waterfalls and other landmarks along the way, and once you get to Superior National Forest, there are a ton of beautiful little lakes with campsites scattered nearly everywhere. Load up the truck with camping gear, kayaks, and puppies and make a long weekend out of it—just don’t forget the bug spray!

Milwaukee, Wisconsin
You could say this is Wisconsin’s version of Minneapolis. There are plenty of breweries to tour and museums to see, with the standouts being the MillerCoors brewery and the Harley Davidson museum. There’s also the Milwaukee Art Museum, Discovery World, Milwaukee Public Museum, Lakefront Brewery, Sprecher Brewery…you could easily spend longer than a weekend here. Pick a morning and set your alarm early enough to see the sunrise over Lake Michigan, no matter the season!

Colorado
It’s about a 12-14 hour drive, but if you can snag a Friday or Monday long Holiday weekend it’s worth the trip. There is something about those mountains that speak to us all as Minnesotans. Hiking, camping and enjoying the great food and nightlife of Denver, or Boulder is a great way to spend a long weekend. I suggest this car if you’re going to make the “trek” so you can fit right in!

Omaha, Nebraska
You can get there in under 6 hours if you take the direct route, but if you have more time then it’s worth taking the leisurely route along highways instead of the interstate. There’s not much to see in the way of landmarks, but the rolling farm country is beautiful any time of year. Once you get to Omaha, there’s plenty to do. From the world-class zoo to museums to the cobbled brick streets of the Old Market, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Just don’t forget to stop at the 2-story tall slides located downtown in the Gene Leahy Mall (just remember to bring a piece of wax paper with you).
