Today was the second press day at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and we were busy getting live coverage to share with you! We finally got the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the hottest new vehicles from all over the world. Make sure to check out our photo album below and our YouTube playlist with tons of model overview videos!
Our first stop this morning was the Subaru press conference where they unveiled the highly anticipated 2015 Subaru WRX STi. This Rally bred sports sedan features a 2.5 Liter Boxer Four cylinder, producing 300 horsepower and 290 lbs/ft. of torque. Subaru promises more speed, better handling, tighter suspension and a high-performance braking system. We know our Subaru fans are just as excited as we are about this one, but sit tight, we don’t expect to see one on show floors until next year!
Following the Subaru press conference, we hightailed it over to Cadillac where they were unveiling the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe! The ATS coupe is the brand’s first compact two-door coupe yet and it did not disappoint. As you would expect, the ATS coupe shares the same wheelbase and platform as the ATS sedan, but with a widened track in the front and rear and an aluminum construction making it the lightest car in its segment. You could feel the excitement in the crowd as Cadillac entertained us with a youthful and upbeat reveal for this hot new coupe. Exterior changes to the ATS coupe include a wider, more aggressive looking grille, and a brand new crest! The new Cadillac crest has only been worn on one other non-production model, the El miraj concept before being unveiled on the ATS coupe today. Cadillac explained the new crest as representing the the purity of Cadillac and the new lower, leaner, meaner design. The ATS coupe is powered by an increased 2.0 liter turbocharged four or a 3.6 liter V6, available in rear wheel or all-wheel drive, as well as a 6-speed manual option. Keep your eye out for the ATS Coupe on Morrie’s Cadillac show floors!
Although previously revealed during an online debut, the 2015 Cadillac Escalade still created a lot of buzz at this year’s auto show in Detroit. This was the first time we were able to get an up close look at the vehicle so make sure to check out our photos in the album below.
We had a full day today at the North American Auto Show where a number of brands in the Morrie’s portfolio had something new and different to bring to the table.
The show stopper of the day was none other than the industry’s first aluminum pickup, the 2015 Ford F-150, which shed a whopping 700 pounds of curb weight. The 2015 Mustang also created a lot of buzz as you can imagine and we were eager to get an up close look at this iconic redesigned vehicle.
We’ve been anticipating the reveal of the Kia GT4 Stinger Concept and as usual their press conference did not disappoint. We got to hear from “The Kia 6″ the group of designers responsible for the vision of this hot new concept.
Other noteworthy reveals from day one included the 2015 Hyundai Genesis and the Nissan Sports Sedan Concept, which gives a sneak peek at the next-generation Maxima. We were also able to catch the reveals from a few luxury brands including the Porsche 911 Targa and the Bentley Continental GT V8 S!
Stay tuned for more photos from day 2 of the North American International Auto Show here in Detroit and make sure to head over to our YouTube page for overview videos on all these exciting new models!
It’s been awhile since we’ve updated you on the progress of the Minnesota Zoo Field Research vehicle that we donated back in 2012. By providing the Zoo with the CX-5 we are able to assist with conservation research efforts by providing the necessary means of transportation so that researchers can to travel to area’s where field work can be conducted.
Since our last update, Biologist, Nick McCann published a scientific manuscript in the Canadian Journal of Zoology that describes how moose at the Minnesota Zoo responded to heat last summer. He also drafted a second manuscript that identifies habitat that free-ranging moose in northeastern Minnesota select when “bedding down” (laying down to rest and digest food). Results from his research will be used to develop science-based management recommendations, with the goal of keeping moose in Minnesota into the future.
Researcher, Brian Kot and his field team recently completed a short series of tests where attempts were made to capture wolves and then release them with GPS tracking collars. This is part of the study was to understand wolf-moose interactions in northern Minnesota. Based on information from these field tests, Brian will build new equipment this winter and resume field work in the spring. He is now working with federal, state, and tribal biologists to analyze behavioral and ecological data from wolves in different areas of Minnesota.
Last but not least, Kim VanderWaal is also making strides in field research in the Mazda CX-5. She traveled to northern Minnesota, where she placed GPS-collars on wild white-tailed deer. She was in the field during Winter Storm Cleon, wading through thigh-deep snow (36 inches!) in this unseasonably cold December. The aim of the project is to determine how deer and moose utilize the same habitat, and how that might influence the transmission of harmful parasites from deer to moose.
Here is a picture of the whole butterfly research team!
We’re so thankful that the Mazda CX-5 Field Research vehicle has helped with Minnesota Zoo Moose and Butterfly research efforts. Here at Morrie’s, giving back is important to us and we are proud to be able to work with such a great organization to help grow our community. Make sure to stay tuned for our blog for updates on the Minnesota Zoo Field Research Vehicle and everything else going on within our organization!
Preparing your vehicle for sub-zero temps
It is always advised to stay indoors and off the roads with these dangerously low temperatures so make sure to drive only if it is absolutely necessary. Cars need special care and attention throughout the winter and we are here to provide you with a few tips to ensure safety and comfort when driving in these conditions.
- Wear as many layers of clothing as possible and pack an extra pair of warm clothes whenever leaving the house
- Check vehicles heating and defrost system
- Keep your gas tank at least half full so that the gas line doesn’t freeze
- Fill tires with air. For every 10 degrees the temperature drops, tires can lose 1 lb. of pressure per square inch
- Make sure you have plenty of fluids including windshield wiper fluid, antifreeze and oil
- Replace wiper blades if they are cracked, worn or misshaped
- Check that your battery isn’t older than it’s recommended life span
It is always important to keep items in your car that will be useful in case of emergency. Check out our list below
Emergency Car Kit
- Ice scraper
- Extra clothes
- Extra windshield wiper fluid
- First aid kit
- Hand warmers
- Hat and gloves
- Booster cables
- bag of salt, sand, or kitty litter
We want to remind everyone to stay safe and warm. If the cold weather has taken a toll on your vehicle you can call us at (952) 544-0096 or visit us online to learn more about our cold weather prep package!
